Don't forget to look at 750cc, 650cc, and maybe 950cc just because there are three terrific machines made in those displacements- they are basically in the same family as the 800-900cc bikes with minor performance differences (the 650cc Yamaha V-Star is usually a popular starter bike, the 750cc Honda Shadow is a terrific bike to start on, and I have been looking for a starter bike and found a 1996 Honda Shadow Ace 1100 - 19K miles - for $2500.
